Here's the story . . .
We obtained several old books from a book shop that has gone out of business. The shop was located in the Northeastern US, and it specialized in old books, rare books, and haunted books. The owner asked that we keep his name, location, and the identity of the former shop private, as he's had several terrifying experiences and he wants nothing more to do with the books or the shop. We visited the shop on the last day it was opened, and we were able to obtain several books. Some are haunted, and others are rare.
About this book . . .
This is a first edition of the historical classic, Last Days of Pompeii, by Baron Edward George Lytton. The author was inspired to write the novel after visiting Milan and viewing a piece by Russian painter, Karl Briullov. The author was 1st Baron Lytton of England. He was born in 1803 and died in 1873. He was a politician, novelist, poet, and playwright.
The story behind this particular book is fascinating.
It was published by Thomas Nelson & Sons, est. 1798. This book was bought at a shop in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was a birthday gift to Sara Reed from her husband. She had this book with her during a terrible carriage accident in which she lost her husband. He incoherently clung to the book in his last moments. She kept the book because it reminded her of her dear husband. At the time of his death, Sara and her husband had a three-year old daughter. She decided to join her brother and his family in America so she immigrated here with her little girl. They eventually settled in New Orleans.
As the years went on, Sara became lost in her own world. Her daughter grew up and moved away. She drifted away from her brother and his family. She was always alone, and she was said to practice witchcraft. She was supposedly angry and saddened over the loss of her husband and envious of married women. She was also in despair because she never saw her daughter or grandchildren. They never visited or acknowledged her. She couldn't figure out why. This haunted her daily.
At some point in her late 80s, she passed on. She lived in a small cottage with few possessions. This book was among those possessions. She was found in her small bed clinging to his book and a faded letter from her husband.
The book, along with her other items, were given away or sold. We were told the book had three owners after Sara, and they all experienced misfortune in their lives after receiving the book. They were all women.
Apparently, one woman had a house fire that completely destroyed the room where she stored her wedding keepsakes and keepsakes from the birth of her child. Nobody was hurt but every item was burned. The other woman's husband left her within two weeks of receiving the book. They were happily married for over 30 years with no indication of trouble. The last woman lost her fiancé to another woman one week before their very large, elaborate wedding. The other woman happened to be the maid of honor!
The book ended up in a library in Baton Rouge. It was quickly discarded. The shop owner heard the book was discarded because it's cursed. We tried to verify that but because it was discarded years ago, we weren't able to make the curse connection. But if its history is accurate, that's probably the reason.
The book shop owner received this book in December 2018. A middle-aged woman came in and told him this entire story. The shop owner became distracted with a phone call for a moment, and when he returned, the woman was gone and the book was on the counter. While speaking to her, he was planning to reject the book. But since she snuck out quickly, he put the book up for sale.
Many people inquired about the book, but nobody bought it after hearing its background. Upon holding it, several people said they smelled coffee very strongly. Some people became faint or nauseous and dropped the book. One guy became very angry and threw the book across the room. He said he didn't know what came over him as he was normally mild mannered. And still others had a wonderful, hopeful feeling. Mostly younger women. A few people had no reaction at all to holding the book or being in its presence. We feel it's full of energy, and here at our shop, everyone seemed to react differently. Two of us felt nothing at all. One of us felt hopeful, excited, and happy. Another became teary-eyed and sad. And three of us smelled strong coffee.
This book is a serious occult item, and we don't feel comfortable selling it to a novice. We prefer someone with experience with cursed or highly haunted items. We have no idea if this book will bring misfortune, good fortune, or nothing at all. We prefer not to hold on to it long though.
Update December 2022 -
We had this book listed prior to our covid closure. While we were closed, we were approached by a local woman (we'll call her Sally). She's a friend of a friend, and she remembered this listing from Etsy. Sally asked to buy this book, so we sold it to her. A month later, the Sally's husband (we'll call him George) contacted us with appreciation. Here's the reason.
Three years ago, George left Sally for another woman. They were happily in love, and George filed for divorce. Sally was devastated. For years, she did everything in her power to try to get George back. He didn't want anything to do with Sally. He was determined to proceed with the divorce and marry the other woman. George and the other woman had everything ready to get married as soon as George and Sally's divorce was final. That's when Sally contacted us for this book. She bought it, gift wrapped it in beautiful paper and bows, and anonymously sent it to the other woman. Within a month, everything change. George suddenly became appalled with the thought of marrying the other woman. He missed Sally terribly and regretted leaving her. He abruptly called off the engagement and stopped his divorced. He rushed back to Sally and begged her forgiveness. She immediately took him back and told him the whole story. When he packed to return home to Sally, he asked the other woman for the book. She threw it at him. He wanted the book because he credited it with bringing him to his senses and back to his wife. When Sally saw the book, she immediately brought it back to us. She didn't want it around just in case it would cause bad luck for her.
So this book might be the perfect break up charm.
Specifics ~
The first edition of this book is selling for over $900 in some places. This copy is in very good shape for being almost 200 years old. It's certainly not perfect though. There is some writing in the front, and there are library markings in the front, back, and spine. One is a pocket and "discarded" is stamped as well. Please view pictures carefully. There was probably a dust jacket at one time. It has a green and brown cloth hard cover, and it's about 6.5x4, 535 pages. The pages are very old and discolored but readable.

Vintage & Antique Items ~
Not all of our items have “haunting histories” so please read each listing very carefully. For the items that do have haunting histories . . .
They will arrive to you as we receive or find them. We do not “spiritually cleanse”, physically restore, or even dust off these items. They're all sold "as is". We don't want to disturb their energy state as any part of the object is an extension of that energy. If you, the new owner, decide to clean or restore the item, that's your choice, of course, but many do not. By sending the object to you the way we received it, you can make the decision rather than us making it for you.
Energy cannot be destroyed but can be transferred or transformed. So maybe it’s not such a far-reaching, kooky, or ridiculous idea that intelligent energy could attach to a special object. However, attachment and expression are two different things. Just because a haunted object exists doesn’t necessarily mean it will produce a paranormal result. Perhaps the intelligence behind it needs to be in a comfortable and secure position before reacting. So please allow time for your object to bond to you before you see results of any spiritual manifestations. Bonding could happen immediately, or it could happen in six months or a year. In some cases, it doesn't happen at all for one person but a friend or a family member or even a pet could cause a reaction. If you're magnetically drawn to an item, it's meant for you. That doesn't mean it will open up to you immediately. But it does mean, it most likely will.
Paying a Hauntingly High (or Low) Price ~
We can't verify the claims made by others, and we are not asserting the objects sold on our website or Etsy store have spiritual, magical, supernatural, or paranormal powers. We are simply presenting the history. We set the prices of items we purchase for resale based on the item itself, its age, status, and its interesting and unique history. All items are marked up fairly and reasonably based on the price we paid for it. The prices of the items sold on consignment are set by the owner of those items. We cannot guarantee paranormal activity. At the same time, we must emphasis, there may be shockingly intense paranormal activity. Only buy an item if you're a patient person pertaining to both possibilities.
