Here's the story . . .
We obtained several old books from a book shop that has gone out of business. The shop was located in the Northeastern US, and it specialized in old books, rare books, and haunted books. The owner asked that we keep his name, location, and the identity of the former shop private, as he's had several terrifying experiences and he wants nothing more to do with the books or the shop. We visited the shop on the last day it was opened, and we were able to obtain several books. Some are haunted, and others are rare.
About this book . . .
This is a first edition children's classic, by Helen R. Martin, published in 1904. This particular book was a gift to a little girl from her teacher, Elda M. Vance, on May 8, 1908.
The book is said to be highly haunted with lots of activity attached to it. The shop owner first obtained the book in 2009. He sold it to a woman who had it for three months before she returned it. She said she didn't want a refund. She just wanted rid of the book. She was vague and said nothing more.
The next owner had the book for 18 months. She returned it saying she didn't know what else to do with it. She tried throwing it out and burying it, but it returned. She said the first eight months were quiet with no activity at all. Then a child ghost began appearing in her daughter's room, sitting in the corner reading the book. This was a nightly occurrence for several weeks. She moved the books into another room, and the ghost started appearing in that room reading the book. One time, the mother woke up in the middle of the night with the child ghost standing in her bedroom doorway pointing at her. There were two more incidents when the ghost appeared to the mother pointing - once in the kitchen and once in the living room. Turns out, the woman had a horrible fall within a few days and hit her head very badly. She wasn't sure if the ghost was warning her or actually responsible for her fall.
Her daughter was often terrified at night. Some mornings she would wake up happy that she played with her friend, Rachel, and other nights, she would scream in horror, unable to sleep. So the mother threw the book away, and it returned. Then she wrapped it in plastic and buried it, and it returned. The energy was heavy and dark upon its return, so she took it back to the shop.
The shop owner said, since he received the book in 2009, it was bought and returned to him because of activity a total of 7 times. The last time, the owner didn't want to give up the book, but she was moving into an old-age home. She had no children or younger relatives to leave the book to, and she didn't want to throw it away. She said the book had a lovely little girl named Rachel attached to it, and Rachel was a wonderful companion to her. She cried when she left the book.
So according to several people, the little girl's name is Rachel. She spelled her name out on a Ouija board one time. She appears as an eight-year-old, in early 20th-century clothing, with long blonde braided hair, and her booties click as she "walks". She's said to walk around often, and she often sings, too. She's believed to be the original owner of the book, although nobody could say for sure.
This is all the information we were given about the book, and we have no way of contacting the shop owner or former owners for any further info.
Specifics ~
The book appears very strange in every picture we took. We couldn't get any better pictures after trying several times. The energy is heavy, and we sense a presence. The book, itself, is in very good to good condition, depending upon your judgment. I would say very good condition for a book almost 120 years old. It has a green cloth hardcover. All the pages are intact, and it's readable. There is writing on the interior that has the teacher's name and the date the book was given to her student. We assume her student was Rachel. The book is approximately 8x5.

Vintage & Antique Items ~
Not all of our items have “haunting histories” so please read each listing very carefully. For the items that do have haunting histories . . .
They will arrive to you as we receive or find them. We do not “spiritually cleanse”, physically restore, or even dust off these items. They're all sold "as is". We don't want to disturb their energy state as any part of the object is an extension of that energy. If you, the new owner, decide to clean or restore the item, that's your choice, of course, but many do not. By sending the object to you the way we received it, you can make the decision rather than us making it for you.
Energy cannot be destroyed but can be transferred or transformed. So maybe it’s not such a far-reaching, kooky, or ridiculous idea that intelligent energy could attach to a special object. However, attachment and expression are two different things. Just because a haunted object exists doesn’t necessarily mean it will produce a paranormal result. Perhaps the intelligence behind it needs to be in a comfortable and secure position before reacting. So please allow time for your object to bond to you before you see results of any spiritual manifestations. Bonding could happen immediately, or it could happen in six months or a year. In some cases, it doesn't happen at all for one person but a friend or a family member or even a pet could cause a reaction. If you're magnetically drawn to an item, it's meant for you. That doesn't mean it will open up to you immediately. But it does mean, it most likely will.
